Activated Charcoal
Fine black powder made from burned hardwood, activated charcoal has a long history in skin care and DIY body products for its ability to bind to surface impurities.
What It Is
Activated charcoal starts as hardwood that is burned down to carbon, then treated with heat or steam to open up millions of tiny pores across its surface. That porous structure is what makes it useful: it clings to oils, dirt, and other particles it contacts.
This is hardwood-derived and made in the USA. In body care, it shows up most often in face masks, cleansing bars, and scrubs. It has no scent, no flavor, and a fine texture that blends smoothly into DIY recipes.
What To Do
For a simple face mask, mix a small pinch with enough water, aloe vera gel, or clay to form a paste. Apply a thin layer, let it sit for five to ten minutes, and rinse well. A little goes a long way. Start with less than you think you need.
It also works stirred into melt-and-pour soap bases or homemade scrubs. Store it in a sealed container away from moisture. Fair warning: it stains. Use an old spoon and keep it off cloth and grout.
