Dried Apple Rings
A whole apple, sliced thin and dried into a chewy ring with concentrated flavor. No added sugar needed when the fruit does the work.
What It Is
Dried apple rings are exactly what they sound like: apple slices with the water removed, leaving behind a chewier texture and a more intense apple flavor than fresh. These are made from red delicious or granny smith apples, so depending on the batch you may get something sweeter or something with a little tartness.
Drying fruit is one of the oldest ways to preserve a harvest, and apples have been dried this way across cultures for centuries. No sulfites, no added sugar. Just apple.
What To Do
Eat them as a snack straight out of the bag, or pack them in a lunchbox where a fresh apple would bruise. They are good chopped into oatmeal, granola, or a grain salad with walnuts and sharp cheddar. Simmer a handful in a pot of pork or chicken with a little cider vinegar and onion and they will soften and melt into the sauce.
To rehydrate for baking, soak in warm water or apple juice for about 20 minutes, then use as you would fresh apple. Store in a cool, dry spot and they will keep for months.
