Quick Oats

Quick Oats

The same oat as the rolled variety, just cut thinner so it cooks in about a minute. Breakfast is ready before the coffee finishes brewing.

What It Is

Quick oats start as whole oat groats, steamed and then rolled into thinner flakes than old-fashioned rolled oats. That extra thinness is the whole difference. It means more surface area, faster water absorption, and a softer, creamier texture when cooked. There are no added ingredients here, just oats.

Oats have been a cold-weather staple across Northern Europe and the British Isles for centuries. They are one of the few grains that hold up to a genuinely fast morning without turning into paste, which is why they landed in so many farmhouse kitchens long before anyone called them a convenience food.

What To Do

Bring about one cup of water or milk of choice to a boil, stir in half a cup of oats, and cook for sixty to ninety seconds, stirring once or twice. Pull it off the heat and let it sit for a moment. It thickens as it rests. Top with whatever you have: a spoonful of peanut butter, sliced banana, a drizzle of honey, a pinch of cinnamon.

Quick oats also disappear into baked goods. Stir them into muffin or cookie batter anywhere a recipe calls for oats and you want a finer, less chewy texture. Store in a cool, dry spot and they will keep for several months.
